Reporting from Victoria Falls

I arrived in Victoria Falls Zimbabwe on Monday after spending one night in Johannesburg South Africa on my way. Dawna met me at the airport and drove me through town. For the first couple of days we stayed in the area, going on a run, walking the dogs, getting adjusted to the time change. I joined Dawna for her Ndbelli language lesson at the house that is kept by Rose of Charity a group that feeds the homeless (mostly children) and supports HIV/AIDS awareness treatment and prevention. On Wednesday we got a lift to Botswana with connections of Dawna and her husband Courtney's friends and spent a few days at the Chobe Safari Lodge taking two boat trips down the river where we witnessed hippos grazing, sleeping, fighting and mating. There were many other animals, reptiles and birds along the Chobe river. The river is the boarder between Botswana and Namibia then is renamed the Zambezi as it flows between Zimbabwe and Zambia.

The gift of my first game drive yesterday came at the very end of the day, sighting a young lioness. It is unusual for lions to be alone but this is mating season so they separate from their pride for a short time. Her energy was so beautiful. I reflected on how this lioness was a role model for me as a woman. She carried herself with such ease, grace and fearless power. The hunter in her was intrigued by little animals darting by but she was wise enough to save her energy for a substantial kill that would provide sustenance.
